Cheesesteak

Cheesesteaks are one of my favorite meals to eat. The recipe uses super firm tofu and mushrooms. It takes a bit of prep to marinate the tofu but the end result is a great flavor and you can experiment with different grilled veggies and cheeses!

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Servings: 3-6 sandwiches

What You'll Need

  • 16 oz pack of super firm tofu

  • 1 pack of cremini mushrooms

  • 1 green pepper

  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil

  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth

  • 1/4 cup of low sodium soy sauce

  • 2 tablespoons of garlic powder

  • 2 tablespoons of onion powder

  • 1 teaspoon of pepper

  • Bread of your choice

  • Shredded cheese (I use Chao Creamy Original Shreds)

  • 1 skillet

Cooking Instructions

  1. Combine vegetable broth, soy sauce, garlic powder, and pepper in a bowl.

  2. Slice super firm tofu into thin strips. Marinate the tofu in your sauce for at least 30 minutes (in the fridge).

  3. Chop mushrooms and green peppers. Set aside.

  4. Prepare your skillet. Heat your skillet to medium-low heat.

  5. Cook super firm tofu until brown and slightly crispy. You can add more soy sauce while cooking the tofu, depending on your preferences.

  6. Remove the cooked tofu and set aside.

  7. Cook mushrooms and green peppers.

  8. Assemble the cheesesteaks. I used french bread hoagies, and started with the tofu, mushrooms and green peppers, and then topped the sandwich with the shredded cheese.

  9. Bake at 350 degrees for five minutes or broil for 1-2 minutes.

  10. Best served immediately.

Tips!

  1. You can make the tofu the day before and let it marinate overnight.

  2. I would suggest using cheese slices instead of shreds. It takes a while to get the shreds to melt.

  3. If you do not have super firm tofu, you can use firm or extra firm but you will have to make sure to drain it or freeze it to get rid of the extra moisture.
