Stir fry is one of my favorite go-to quick meals! With few ingredients and several ways to incorporate sauces, my tofu stir fry recipe is a great option on those nights when you are hungry but feeling a bit lazy! Enjoy.
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 3-4 people
What You'll Need
Rice of choice (I use Trader Joe's Jasmine Rice)
14 oz of Tofu (Extra Firm or Firm will do)
1-2 tablespoons of Neutral Oil
1/4 cup corn starch
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
1-2 cups of broccoli (florets)
2 tablespoons of soy sauce
2 tablespoons of a hot/spicy sauce of your choice*
1/2 cup of water
Salt and pepper to taste
Cooking Instructions
Cook rice based on the instructions on the package.
Remove tofu from the container. Place the tofu on place (put a paper towel underneath) and use a heavy pan to drain the tofu of all excess water/liquid.
Once the tofu is drained, cut into small cubes and toss in a bowl with corn starch, onion powder, garlic powder, and pepper.
Prepare a large skillet with neutral oil. Place tofu in the pan and brown on each side (3-4 minutes on each side).
While the tofu is browning in the skillet, begin making your sauce. Start by adding in your soy sauce. The soy sauce serves as the base of the sauce. Next, add in your hot/spicy sauce. I use O'Food's Gochujang Korean Chili Sauce, but you can also use Lee Kum Kee's Chili Garlic Sauce. Then, add in your remaining ingredients, tasting as you go.
Prepare another medium-sized skillet (this is for your broccoli). Add the oil to the skillet, and after 30 seconds add in the broccoli. Stir until the broccoli is to your preferred texture. Cook for about 5-6 minutes. Alternatively, you can steam the broccoli in the microwave.
Now that the tofu is crispy, add your sauce to the pan and continue cooking the tofu. You want to the tofu to be sticky, but you have to be careful to make sure your sauce does not burn.
Best when served hot. You can store this meal in an airtight container in the fridge for 4-5 days.
Tips!
The corn starch gives the tofu the crispy texture you are looking for in a stir fry. You do not need much but you did need to coat each piece of tofu.
Be careful to watch the tofu while it is browning! You will need to pan to be pretty hot but want to avoid burning the tofu.
Stir fry is another "kitchen sink" type of dish in that you can add pretty much any vegetable you like to the dish.
Sauces are an important part of stir fry! One way to make this dish your own is to experiment with your own sauce recipes. Soy sauce always a good base. Just make sure you purchase the low-sodium brand at your local grocery store.
Another way to make this recipe your own is to add you own mixture of spices. I went for a spicier taste but you could use a milder blend of spices!
